Formed

Bathurst, NSW, 1994

Band information

Spawn was a death metal band formed in Bathurst in 1994 by then high school students Che deBoehmler and Mark Sikora. The original lineup was a four piece, also including David Sikora on bass and Richard Pearce on drums. This lineup spent the year rehearsing and developing their sound, writing material in a death metal vein with atmospheric touches. Taking a break from the band at the end of the year following Mark's tragic death, the band reformed early in 1995 around its most well known lineup, which now included Wayne Moldez on rhythm guitar and Chris Albon on lead vocals.

The band spent 1995 prolifically writing material and playing some well received live shows around the local area, finishing the year with some 20 or so fully realised songs, but unfortunately, aside from rehearsal recordings and home videos, no documentation exists from this period.

During 1996 the band began to add more and more elements of atmospheric layered melody to their sound, the influence of the British Doom Death scene and early Post-punk/Goth becoming more pronounced (alongside nods to Black Metal), also adding a fulltime keyboardist - Christine Ng - to the lineup. The band also made their notorious live appearance at the local University at this point, alongside numerous all ages gigs.

During preparation to enter the studio in 1997 to record an ep, ongoing inter-band tension came to a head - drummer Richard Pearce failed to attend the sessions and drum tracks were consequently played by Che on one track and programmed on another. This recording was never formally released, and soon after the band ceased for some time.

Reconvening in 1999, Spawn began producing new material, and recorded the EP "The Spore", released in 2000. Following this, the band began gigging regularly again, making their first appearances in Sydney and other areas outside the local region - alongside a memorable Bathurst all ages bill also featuring Grenade and Stone Wings. Hamish Price joined the band during this period also, replacing Wayne Moldez.

However, towards the end of the recording of the full length follow up to "The Spore" in 2003 (and during a run of Sydney live appearances) the lineup of the band again soon dissolved. Left were only founding member Che and 2nd guitarist Hamish, around which the final lineup formed.

Having been well received in its new incarnation, the new lineup of the band released a raw, self titled demo (from which the song "Anywhere But Here" was selected for an appearance on the Underearthed 2 compilation), backed up by some more Bathurst, Sydney and Canberra live dates.

Spawn finally split soon after due to geographical/logistical problems, with the members now living hundreds of kilometres apart following Spawn's partial relocation to Sydney. Che went on to form The Veil in 2006, with a first release now imminent.
